Most people are aware of the free photo storage offered by Google. However, many of you, even those of you who are Amazon Prime subscribers, don’t realize that Amazon has free unlimited photo storage, even of full-resolution RAW image files. With Google, you only get 15GB of storage if you don’t want the images to be compressed. If you compress the images, you can have unlimited storage, but the photos will not have the quality they initially did.
If you would like to move your Google photos (or copy them for another backup), you’ll need to download them from Google and move them into the Amazon account. The following shows how to do this easily.
Get Mobile Device Ready
If you use the Google Photos mobile app, the first step is to clear the phone of all photos that are currently backed up on your cloud account. This will eliminate the possibility of ending up with doubles of all those images on your Prime account.
1. Open the Google Photos app.
2. Tap the menu bar (the three lines in the top left corner).
3. Tap “Free up device storage.” The app will let you know if all of your photos are backed up before you take this action.
4. Tap the button.
While you are in Settings, turn off “Automatic backup” by tapping the “Back up and Sync” option and turning the toggle switch to off. If you don’t do this, you will have backups in both places, which may not be a bad thing, since it’s always best to have more than one backup.
Next, install the Amazon Photos app on your mobile phone.
Open the app and decide if you want to automatically back up photos and devices and turn the toggle switch off or on.
Download Your Google Photos
Now you need to download the photos you want to move to your Amazon Prime Photos onto your computer or cloud storage.
1. Navigate to Google Takeout where all your data is stored.
2. You will see a massive list of app data from all the apps you use. Click on “Deselect all” because it’s much faster than doing each one independently.
3. Scroll down until you find Google Photos and check the box next to it.
4. If you do not want to download specific albums or other formats, click on the appropriate box and deselect the items you do not want.
5. Scroll to the very bottom to find and click the “Next step” button.
6. Choose your delivery method. I used the option to deliver a download link to my email because I know there are a lot of pictures in there.
7. Leave the other options – export type, file type, and archive size – as they are and click “Create archive.”
Wait for the archive to be created. It can take quite a while, depending on how many photos you are backing up.
Prime Photos Instructions
While you are waiting for your files to download, prepare to move the files onto Amazon Prime Photos.
To use Prime Photos, you need an Amazon Prime account. If you have Prime, then you automatically have Prime Photos. There is nothing else you need to do to set one up.
1. Navigate to Amazon Photos App.
2. Click the “Download” button.
3. Open the file and launch the installation.
4. Click Install.
5. The application should launch automatically. If not, open it.
6. Sign in to your account.
7. Drag the downloaded folder of your Google Photos to the Amazon Photos Window.
8. Choose the folder where you want to save the photos or create a new one.
If you have more than one file of images that downloaded from your Google Photos, repeat the process of dragging the folders to the Amazon Photos App window.
Amazon only allows for 5GB of video as part of their storage, but images are unlimited. You may wish to keep the videos off this server or upgrade to 100GB for $11.99 a month if you feel you must have the videos on Amazon.

Keeping photos backed up is a priority for most people because we don’t want to lose those memories, and using Amazon Photos is a great way to give you peace of mind.
